Bamboo Charcoal

£8.00

Bamboo charcoal is a 100% natural product.

Bamboo charcoal is made from mature stems, burned in a special earthen furnace at temperatures over 1000° C. The stem retains its shape, becoming pure carbon. The charcoal, with its tiny holes, is a simple and effective way to filter tap water, improving its taste and purity. It can also be used to absorb humidity or unpleasant odours from the air.

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world and the supply is abundant and sustainable. Badly managed bamboo forests can be invasive, encroaching on other plant life and causing land erosion. Using bamboo products from well-managed forests helps to protect the ecosystem.

Water purification
100g of charcoal to one litre of water

Charcoal can make tap water taste better and purify it by filtering out chlorine and other additives. The filtration effect will last for 2-3 months if the charcoal is re-sterilised once every 10 days.
Meanwhile, minerals in the charcoal itself, such as potassium and calcium, are gradually released to turn the tap water into mineral water. The beneficial minerals continue to be released for about 10 days.

To sterilise the charcoal after use:
1. Boil charcoal for 10mins to sterilise and allow to cool and dry.
2. Put the pieces into a jug filled with tap water and leave for at least 5 hours. For the best results, leave overnight.
3. Repeat the process every 10 days. The charcoal can be re-used as a water filter for up to 3 months.

After using the charcoal as a water filter, you can reuse it around the house for a further 6-12 months. It is an effective way to absorb odours or dampness in a fridge, bathroom, wardrobe or shoe cabinet. Dry it out in the sun from time to time to maintain its effect.
Finally, crushed bamboo charcoal can be buried in the garden or mixed with compost to aerate soil. It absorbs excess moisture when it is wet and releases it in dry conditions, helping the soil stay moist. The charcoal can hold nutrients in the soil, preventing them from being washed away.
